In 1521 Charles V the current Roman Emperor split the Empire into two. He gave the Austrian and German lands to his brother Ferdinand and he gave his son, Philip, Spain, Netherlands, some of Italy, Portugal, and some New World territories. During the Battle of the White Mountain in 1620 (it was in Bohemia) the Habsburg were allowed rights of the Bohemian monarchy. Their influence spread and they got some control over west Hungary because Ferdinand II became the King of East Hungary. However when the Habsburg empire expanded into Hungary the Turks started to contend with them.
