Rudolf of Habsburg took control of Austria and Styria in 1278. The family of Habsburg later gained control over Carinthia and Carniola in 1335 and Tyrol in 1363. Beginning in 1445 the Holy Roman Emperors until the end of the Roman Emperors in 1740 (except for a term in 1742 - 1745 held by Charles VII). The first Holy Roman Emperor from the Habsburg house was Frederick III. The Habsburg family protected Catholicism against Protestantism in East-Central Europe. In 1493 they were able to spread there control into the county of Burgundy however they lost control in 1555.
